'Oxford of the East'
Year of Establishment :
University of Punewas established on 10th February, 1948 under the Poona University Act. The University has since become one of the top centers for research and teaching in the country.
It occupies an area of about 411 acres. It is popularly known as the 'Oxford of the East'.
History :
Initially the university had a jurisdiction extending over 12 districts of western Maharashtra. With the establishment of Shivaji University in Kolhapur in 1962, the jurisdiction of the university was restricted to five districts, namely Pune, Ahmednagar, Nashik, Dhule and Jalgaon.
Out of these, two districts Dhule and Jalgaon are attached to the North Maharashtra University established in August 1990.
The peaceful environs and state of the art facilities provide it's numerous students with an ideal atmosphere to pursue research in various areas of Science, Arts, Commerce and Languages. The University houses 40 departments which provide a wide array of academic programs.
It has about 307 recognized research institutes and 612 affiliated colleges offering graduate and under-graduate courses. 70 research institutions have been recognized by the University for research. These include institutions of national importance like the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), MACS, CWPRS, NIV, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Deccan College among others.
D Y Patil College of Engineering is affiliated to Pune university and has the highest intake of 630 seats for the bachelors degree in engineering.
University Grade / Ranking :
1) The University of Pune was ranked 601+ in the QS World University Rankings of 2011 and 191-200 in the QS Asian University Rankings of 2012.
2) The university has been given the highest "A" rating by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC)for its overall performance.
3) For its strict examination evaluation, it is also known as one of the toughest universities in India.
Location :
University of Pune (formerly known as University of Poona), one of the leading universities in India, is located in the North-western part of Pune city.
The location of the university has historical importance. Some incidents of the Battle of Khadki took place where the present day university is located.
The present day main building was built in 1864 and was recognized as the Governor's House. The university is home to IUCAA, an institute for astronomy.

Admission Procedure for First Year Diploma Engineering
The admissions for engineering courses are carried out as per the norms and schedule framed by the DTE from time to time. Selection  for  admission  will  be  strictly  on  the  basis  of  inter-se-merit  of  the  eligible  candidates  from the respective  State  Board  areas  based  on  the  best  of  5 marks  at  the  S.S.C.  (Std.  X) examination.

The university offers Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degrees apart from diplomas and certificates in many disciplines.

Spread over a vast area of 411 acres, the University has superbly beautiful and picturesque campus. The green lawns decorated with beautiful fountains of the British times and the royal building of the University are a regular source of attraction to the aesthetically oriented people of Pune, filmmakers, musicians and celebrities.
The University campus is covered with a large number of age - old trees, which provide shade and prettiness, and the peaceful surrounding make for a very refreshing environment for serious studies and research.
The Main Building
The University of Pune is symbolically identified with the Main Building, it is an epic building with a beautiful architecture, and its tower project high in to the sky bearing the flag of the University. The office of the Vice-Chancellor, Dean's Chambers and Records Section are located in the Main Building. Meeting of various academic bodies are conducted in the four prestigious halls of the Main Building Viz., Yashwantrao Chavan Sabhagriha, Sant Dnyaneshwar Sabhagriha, Shivaji Sabhagriha and the Sant Gadge Maharaj Sabhagriha.

Jayakar Library
The Jaykar Library was established in January 1950, named in honor of the First Vice-Chancellor Dr. M.R. Jayakar.
The library is a well-stocked library containing plenty of books regarding various subjects.
